Evidence-Based Therapy
I adopt a person-centred approach to understand your individual challenges and the areas where you need support. Additionally, I incorporate elements of acceptance and commitment therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and narrative therapy into our counselling sessions. This integrated approach facilitates a thoughtful exploration of your experiences and perspectives, providing a framework for tailored guidance. Please see below for more information on the three therapies.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based therapy for helping clients address unresolved emotional issues, self-defeating behaviours, and value conflicts. It also supports clients with mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and workplace stress. ACT enables clients to accept, process, and decouple from hurtful memories by drawing attention to the 'here-and-now' (often referred to as mindfulness). This focus reduces rumination, providing the psychological space for values-based goals.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is an evidence-based therapy that acknowledges clients as experts in their own lives. Thus, they are capable of identifying problem-solving actions and the areas for life re-appraisal. SFBT involves counsellors working with clients to establish what their lives were like when their problems were managed or absent; what their lives would look like if their problems disappeared; and the goals and actions for positive change. SFBT draws on a client’s strengths, fostering self-esteem and capacity building.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative therapy is an evidence-based therapy that helps clients rethink their life story, separating the issues negatively impacting their lives from individual worth. NT emphasises that it's the problem that needs fixing, not the client. Consequently, it aims to identify when the problem occurred, its cause, and the situational context. This process allows clients to exercise control over their lives, constructing an alternative life narrative informed by their desired identity, values, and aspirations.
